First Generation College Visits
Four Newcomer students and parents visited the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee and Marquette University as part of District 214's Foundation initiative.
After School Club with Our Friends from the Arlington Heights Memorial Library
Two times a month, Newcomers stay after school to participate in fun activities and volunteer with our friends from the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. This year, Newcomers have written holiday cards to incarcerated youths, made holiday crafts, and participated in STEM activities. Having fun can be educational!
A Little Bowling to Celebrate Volunteerism at Newcomers
Newcomers have volunteered over ten hours in the community and as a reward, a little fun with bowling. For some Newcomers, their first time bowling!
Thanksgiving at Newcomers
Newcomer students celebrate their fist Thanksgiving during special luncheon with staff after volunteering to pack food for people in developing countries.
Newcomers at Work with Basket Brigade
On Saturday, November 18th, Newcomer students and staff volunteered to pack food and make Thanksgiving baskets with Basket Brigade, an organization out of Streamwood, IL. Newcomers had a great time giving back to the community and helped to make a difference to many families over the Thanksgiving holiday.
Roosevelt University Tour 2017
Students and staff took a tour of Roosevelt University in Chicago. This was a great way to prepare Newcomers with post-secondary options and to explore their new city.
Latino Summit 2017
Newcomer students participated in the 17th annual Latino Summit at Harper College. During the day, local high school students listened to panels of college and professional Latinos. This year, the keynote speaker was Lt. Governor of Illinois, Evelyn Sanguinetti. Two former Newcomer students were also panelists - Jhoana a soon to be social worker attending Northeastern University and Daniel a soon to be high school math teacher attending the University of Illinois - Chicago, spoke to current Newcomer students and motivated them to consider post-secondary options and to pursue their dreams.
Celebrating First Halloween
Newcomer students had a great time learning how to say "trick or treat" for the first time in English, playing musical chairs, and finding out more about this unique, American holiday.
Power of Perspective Symposium - Illinois Global Scholars
On Saturday, October 28th, former Newcomer students and Mr. Perez attended the “Power of Perspective” symposium in downtown Chicago. The event, hosted by the Illinois Global Scholars, offered the opportunity for Newcomer students, along with Mr. Perez, to participate and present their own workshop - “You Bring Out the Newcomer in Me” - while exploring global education and global citizenship.
