School Security
To better protect students, staff, and visitors, a credential exchange program will be implemented at all District 214 buildings during school hours. All visitors will be required to present a valid driver’s license or another government issued photo I.D. in exchange for a visitor’s badge. Your driver’s license will be scanned into a visitor management system, which screens for registered sex offenders. A visitor’s badge with your photo will be printed for you to wear while inside the building.

Students Volunteer to Read
As another school year comes to an end, so do the weekly visits with the children involved in the District's Family Literacy Program. Every Monday, Newcomer Center students volunteered to read to the preschool aged children of parents concurrently taking adult education courses in the building. The experience benefited both the high school students and the young children. Pottery Workshop for Students
Carl Mankert, a professional potter from Chicago Kiln Service, recently came to the Newcomer Center to work with students in an after school pottery workshop. Mankert guided the students through the process of making pottery, giving them the opportunity to create their own works of art. After the pottery was made, Mankert fired everything at his studio. Students painted their artwork the following week; then the pieces made a final trip back to the studio to be glazed. All the students were

Student Led Conferences
On Thursday, April 8th student led parent conferences were held at the Newcomer Center. From 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM, students shared highlights of their work using paper and electronic portfolios. Students took ownership over their learning by leading the discussions with their families.
